If a tree falls, the first thing you’ll need to do is make sure that you and everyone else is safe. If you’re in the middle of a storm, it may be best to shelter in an interior room of your home until the storm subsides. With the weather settled, you will likely be curious to get a better look at the spectacle of the downed tree outside. Don’t get too close to the tree! If the tree is very close to the house, you may consider using an alternate doorway to go outside.
Approach with caution. Look for overhead hazards, such as broken limbs that are still hanging precariously. Be cautious of power lines that may have been knocked down from above or that have been pulled up from the ground. Even a tree leaning on a power line can present a deadly hazard. A leaning tree may fall at any moment. Even a tree on the ground could shift and roll.
If you’re not sure whether a call to 911 is necessary, and you believe that any urgency that may exist is not time sensitive as to require a rapid response, you could call the non emergency number to the fire department and speak with someone who could help you decide whether a response by the fire department is appropriate.
